712 Fisher Street Morehead City NC, 28557

The Captain George J. Nelson Cottage

This historic cottage (4 restored bedrooms, 3 contemporary bathrooms), in the scenic historic district of Morehead City, is a 5-minute walk to dozens of restaurants and shops and a minute from the Conchs' Point Pier on Calico Bay. The cottage, built around 1915, is an example of the "Morehead Special," a variation of pyramidal cottages found nowhere else in North Carolina. The location provides immediate access to the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, the North Carolina Seafood Festival, the "Bald Is Beautiful" convention and nearby recreational, sport, and nature areas. The entire Crystal Coast can be enjoyed from the cottage, including Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, Fort Macon State Park, and Emerald Isle as well as the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center (Harkers Island), NC Maritime Museum, (Beaufort), History Museum of Carteret County (Morehead City), and NC Aquarium (Pine Knoll Shores). It is also a good starting point from which to visit the historic lighthouses on the Outer Banks.

The land for the cottage was purchased in 1888 by Alexander and Caroline Willis from the Shepards Point Land Company. Shepard's Point-a peninsula approximately six blocks wide between Calico Bay on the north and Bogue Sound on the south-was the heart of the fledgling community that was established in 1857 and named for Governor John Motley Morehead. George J. (1884-1945) and Viola J. Nelson (1885-1957) purchased their cottage in 1934 although they lived at the property from at least 1920. Viola J. Nelson was born at Davis, NC, and Captain Nelson was born on Browns Island (Harkers Island), NC. They and their descendants owned the house until 1959. Captain Nelson was a blacksmith, merchant, police officer, and chief of the Morehead City Fire Department. The cottage received a historic plaque to honor him in 2016.
